Successes

We report here some of our numerous successes in academic and reserach areas, on international level. Other, national level achievements, are archived on the Polish version of this site.

Academic

Our team UW2 consisting of Jan Gwiazda, Stanisław Karpiejczyk and Jerzy Olkowski are the Central Europe vice-champion in Collegiate Programming They won gold medal in this year CERC ICPC, thereby advancing to the world finals. Our other teams won two silver medals and one bronze.

MIM FORCE ONE - our team consisting of Korneliusz Obarski (captain), Łukasz Łopacki, Adam Naskręcki and Mikołaj Woźniak won gold medal, finishing second in the whole ISTCiM competition (International Student Team Competition in Mathematics). Individually, all our representatives also won gold medals. Adam Naskręcki solved all the tasks and won a special award (Best Individual Performance Prize).
Team's couach was Dr. Rafał Martynek.

 

international GMiL Tunezja

Our students, staff, and alumni performed exceptionally well at the International Championships in Mathematical Games:
- L2 (university students): 1st place for Robert Soboński, 2nd for Konrad Czarnecki;
- GP (adults, general public): 1st place for Łukasz Kalinowski;
- HC (adults, top-level competition): 1st place for Łukasz Bożyk.
Moreover Marianna Gołębiewska finished fifth in L2-p category, and as a team, Poland (consisting in 3/5 of our students mentioned above) won the 1st place.

 

IMC

In the International Mathematical Competition for students held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, MIM FORCE ONE team won two first-degree prizes and two second-degree prizes:
Adam Naskręcki - 80 p, First Prize (gold medal)
Korneliusz Obarski - 60 p, First Prize (gold medal)
Paweł Pielasa - 46 p, Second Prize (silver medal)
Szymon Szmigielski - 46 p, Second Prize (silver medal).
In an unofficial ranking UW took 8th place.
The team was prepared by Dr Rafał Martynek.

Our former student, Przemysław Dębiak, won the AtCoder World Tour Finals 2025 Heuristic! It came as a huge surprise that the winner was not a AI chatbot, but a human.

 

VJ

In this year's edition of the VJIMC - Vojtech Jarnik International Mathematical Competition, our students performed very well:
- in category I (1st-2nd year of studies) Jeremi Hyska finished 9-10th, and Mikołaj Woźniak -15th;
- in category II (3rd-5th year of studies) Adam Naskręcki was third, and Korneliusz Obarski finished 8-9th.

The UW team consisting of Ivan Gechu, Adam Sołtan and Franciszek Witt took third place in the Central European Collegiate Programming Championships, winning the gold medal and qualifying for the world championship finals. The other four UW teams won all four bronze medals.

MIM Force team, composed of Antoni Puch (captain), Jakub Jagiełła, Szymon Szmigielski, Cezary Botta, and Korneliusz Obarski, won the team category of the International Student Team Competition in Mathematics. Individually our students won: a gold medal and the "Best Individual Performance Prize": Antoni Puch, gold medals and the "First Prize Diploma": Jakub Jagiełła and Korneliusz Obarski, silver medals: Cezary Botta and Szymon Szmigielski.

 

IMC

The whole team representing MIMUW, i.e., Korneliusz ObarskiPaweł PielasaSzymon SzmigielskiAntoni Puch won gold medals on the IMC 2024 (International Mathematics Competition for University Students). They were coached by Witold Bednorz.

 

Research

consolidator

Wojciech Czerwiński and Michał Pilipczuk have just received the prestigious Consolidator grants from the European Research Council. Dr. Wojciech Czerwiński will lead the POLARIS project entitled "Reachability in Infinite Systems at High Resolution" and dr. Michał Pilipczuk will lead the WYDRA project entitled "Towards a unified structure theory for dense graphs".

Our doctoral student Alicja Ziarko received Google PhD Fellowship 2025 . Alicja is developing research on abstract levels of generalization in machine learning systems. She works under the supervision of Professor Piotr Miłoś.

In the Top 2% Scientists 2024 ranking, issued by Stanford University, there are 9 our sceintists: Mikołaj Bojańczyk, Stefan Dziembowski, Hung Son Nguyen, Anh Linh Nguyen, Wojciech Rytter, Piotr Skowron, Dominik Ślęzak, Andrzej Tarlecki and Henryk Wózniakowski.

 

neurIPS

NeurIPS, probably the most prestigious conference in the field of AI and ML accepted for the event 10 papers from our Faculty. The authors are: Hubert Baniecki, Przemysław Biecek, Marek Cygan, Piotr Miłoś, Michał Nauman, Szymon Płotka, Bartłomiej Sobieski, Piotr Skowron, Konrad Staniszewski, Ewa Szczurek, Michał Zawalski and Alicja Ziarko.

Marek Cygan, Michał Pilipczuk, Piotr Sankowski, Piotr B. Mucha, Stefan Dziembowski, Łukasz Kozłowski, Piotr Skowron, Dominik Ślęzak, Mikołaj Bojańczyk, Linh Anh Nguyen, Andrzej Tarlecki and Hung Son Nguyen are among the 2% most cited scientists from all over the world (organized by Stanford Uni and Elsevier).

 

Other

THE

Informatics at our Faculty appear once again very high in the Times Higher Education 2025 ranking. University of Warsaw in the domain of computer science placed 176-200.

 

Professor Jan Madey was acknowledged for his contribution to the development of the International Collegiate Programming Contest community and programming competitions in Poland and around the world. The award ceremony took place during the ICPC world finals in Baku in September 2025.

 

ECMI

The University of Warsaw has received the ECMI Teaching Center certificate for the "applied mathematics" specialization offered at our Faculty. This is a confirmation that it offers education that meets the model requirements of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry

 

shanghai

In the Shanghai academic ranking of World Universities mathematics offered at UW was ranked the highest among Polish universities (places 101-150). In computer science UW appeared there for the first time and is listed as the only Polish university in this field (places 301-400).
