Skein modules of 3-manifolds have had their renaissance in the last 5 years. It is to a great extend because of interest in them by theoretical physicists, in particular Edward Witten. I will discuss Witten conjecture on the structure of the Kauffman bracket skein module of closed 3-manifolds, and a progress in the theory related to Witten conjecture.
