In this talk, I will explain my work with Yuji Tachikawa, to use algebraic topology to a physical problem of vanishing of anomalies in heterotic string theories. We translate the problem into a mathematical problem to show that acerta in transformation of generalized cohomology theories from TMF (Topological Modular Forms) to the Anderson dual to String bordism. TMF is related to 2d superconformal field theories via Stoltz-Teichner conjecture, and the Anderson duals are related to classification of anomalies via Freed-Hopkins conjecture. I will explain these ingredients, as well as related works on Anderson duals.
