Information for students admitted to second-cycle studies
First, we kindly ask those of you who have been accepted for both the Master's degree in Computer Science and Machine Learning at the same time, to choose only one field of study already when submitting your recruitment documents.
The reason we ask is because:
- ML studies are labour-intensive and time-consuming - they are difficult to combine with another field of study and most often also with work
- ML and computer science have a lot in common - it doesn't really make sense to study both of them. Especially since many of the elective courses are also common.
- you cannot count on any special concessions (such as double linking, a leave from one field of study to complete the other) for studying computer science and ML at the same time
- the decision to conduct a second round of recruitment is made now. A second round is only possible if the limit of places is not fulfilled. Therefore, your decision to resign in August or later will block a place that could be used by someone else. If you choose now, we may be able to conduct September recruitment for at least one of these fields of study.
Even before the start of the academic year
The student council invites you to participate in the Friday integration meeting , the zero camp and to join the year groups on FB (details in the letter from the student council in Polish).
Adaptation days for incoming students are organised in the last week of September. Some of the meetings are addressed mainly to first-cycle students, but we welcome everyone to participate in meetings about USOS system and IT resources, and we highly encourage those who have not studied at our faculty.
We also invite international students to Pre-Welcome Days - online meetings to be held on 8 August, 13 August and 5 September 2024. (details: Pre-Welcome Days).
Registration for courses
The second-cycle studies give you quite a lot of freedom in the choice of your courses. In the student guide, you will find entries on elective courses in the various fields of study, as well as course schedules , i.e. schedules describing the type and number of courses required to complete a given year.
We will register you administratively for all obligatory courses of the winter semester in your first semester of study (in the following semesters you will already do this on your own and we will assume that you do so responsibly and according to your knowledge of your situation). Unlike undergraduate students, you will not be assigned by us to practical classes and lab groups. You can select them during the RDG round (registration for exercise groups) between 9.09 and 12.09 or the group place exchange (from 19.09 to 28.09). The deadlines for the individual registration rounds can be found on the USOSweb of our faculty (following the links News → Registration Calendar).
Please note: we do not administratively register ML students for obligatory courses equivalent to elective/monograph courses completed during their first-cycle studies (more information here).
If your course schedule includes elective courses (depending on the field of study, they may be indicated as facultative/ elective/specilization courses) you need to register for them on your own. The first round of course registration ends on 02/08/2024. We will try to generate your usosweb accounts in time for you to participate. Otherwise, the next chance to register will be between 1 and 5 October.
Please refer to the student guide for details on registration and descriptions of each group of courses.
Mathematics students, when choosing faculties, should keep in mind the courses that are obligatory for their chosen master degree programme and specialization (assignment for master seminar, which determines the specialization track, will be announced on 30.09). A set of specialisation courses should be completed by the end of the second year of study, but students selecting the Mathematical Methods in Finance programme should register for some of them already in the first year.
Please note, however, that specialization courses are only a part of the range of elective courses that you are required to complete. Therefore, you can freely register for the courses you are interested in even before the assignment for the master seminars is announced.
Course schedule
You will find the schedules of the individual classes for which you will be registered in USOSweb (by following the links: My USOSweb → Schedule→ My schedule).
Note to Machine Learning students: there are only Bootcamp, Ideas and informatics classes and seminar meetings in the first two weeks of October (although seminars and Ideas and informatics continue throughout the semester), which requires some attention to the planning of the course schedule and the early weeks of classes.
When arranging your class schedule, note where each class is held. Classes are not always held at 2 Banacha Street.
More information (for students who have not studied at the faculty of MIM before)
When submitting your recruitment documents, you declared that you were aware of the fees charged at the faculty of MIM if you fail to pass the courses for which you are registered. Just to remind you, please read the following information on the rules for charging fees and the current rates.
Student mail account and USOSWeb
From now on, you will receive all information by email to the student account created for you. Use student email to contact faculty members. When writing to the student office, remember to put the abbreviation of your field of study (MAT/INF/BIOINF/ML) in the subject line of your message - thus your message will reach to the right person faster.
You will have two email addresses related to the two accounts generated for you:
- a faculty of MIM account and an email address in the domain @students.mimuw.edu.pl
instructions for logging in to USOSweb and MIM student mail.
For more information, visit the Computer Lab website
and
- google account and related email address @student.uw.edu.pl
for more information see: University of Warsaw IT Services
We strongly advise you to check both email addresses regularly (or set up an email redirect).
In MIM's USOWeb you will find, among other things, course groups at the faculty of MIM , take part in registration for courses at MIM, and apply for a place in a student residence through it (the application round for new students lasts from 5-22 August 2024). The rules for applying for a student residence are described on the University of Warsaw Student Welfare and Support Office website.
Registration for general university courses takes place via the UW USOSWeb , according to the registration calendar there.
Organisation of your studies and deadlines
The MIM calendar and student office announcements on FB will help you to meet the deadlines, and you can read about the organisation of studies in the Student Guide and in the Regulations for Studies at the University of Warsaw.
