Adjustments to the course of study and sick leaves

It is the vice-dean for student affairs (otherwise known as the KJD, i.e. the head of the teaching unit) who makes the decision to adapt the course of study or grant a sick leave on the basis of an opinion from the UW Office for Persons with Disabilities (BON). You need to contact the BON because the adjustments of the course of study must be adapted to your needs.

Adjustments of the course of study may relate to classes and/or tests and examination form.

In the case of classes, depending on the type of difficulties you are facing, the vice-dean for student affairs may:

  • increase the limit of permitted absences from classes,
  • allow you to record classes for personal use (but only with the consent of the course coordinator),
  • allow you to change the standard deadlines for submitting projects, homework, etc,
  • change some speeches in the group to another form of class activity.

Please note, however, that you need to agree each of the above forms with your course instructors in advance, even if you have received the Dean's approval. That is particularly important in the case of absences and individual deadlines for submission of projects and homework: for some courses, too many absences make it impossible to achieve the expected learning outcomes, and the deadline for completing your homework (and the publication of its solutions) may limit your ability to extend submission dates. In fact, one of the main responsibilities of instructors is to ensure that classes are well organised for all students.

In your third year, you will definitely not be allowed any changes in the form of obtaining credit for proseminar and the team programming project. In the case of the proseminar you will face at least one group presentation, in the case of the team project - the ability to work in a group and to meet all set deadlines are absolutely required.

Finally, note that if you do not attend classes you make it harder to pass them.

You may be allowed the following adjustments for examinations and tests:

  • extending the examination/test time by 25%,
  • the use of noise-cancelling headphones,
  • approval to adapt the oral examination by giving you the opportunity to receive the questions in written form and to note down the key elements of your speech before you start presenting your knowledge,
  • extended preparation time for the oral examination,
  • an oral examination only in the presence of the examiner (in particular without the presence of another student preparing for the examination),
  • use of a laptop/tablet in the examination, but only with prior agreement with the examiner,
  • in justified cases (e.g. when symptoms of your illness increase during the examination session) postponing the first dates of selected examinations or tests - in this case you definitely need to inform the Student office/Vice-dean for student affairs of the above situation,
  • agreeing an individual examination timetable with the head of the teaching unit (KJD) where examinations are scheduled between the main and resit dates, with the right to two examination dates for each course.

Remember, however, that the above adjustments are individual and temporary. They are intended to help you cope with the effects of your health problems, to implement the right therapy or to select the right treatment. We do, however, trust that final-year students will implement strategies that allow them not to use support solutions or to significantly reduce the amount of support.

You also need to remember a very important rule. If you take an exam in a course, you are thus saying that you are prepared to accept the grade. Therefore, we do not allow the option to reschedule examinations after you have taken them or to cancel the grade you have obtained.

If you are in a situation of a longer-term, but still temporary, inability to fulfil your academic commitments, you can apply for a year's sick leave or to extend the duration of your studies over a longer period.
