Suggested ways from the airport to the youth hostel STF Fridhemsplan

New version 19/6

Airport Arlanda (most flights will land there)

There are two ways to go to the youth hostel.
  1. By bus

Follow the signs to the place where the flight busses, flygbussarna, depart. Buy a ticket online in advance or at several places at the airport. The drivers also sell tickets, but they only accept credit cards, no cash. Tickets cost 79-99 kr (9-12 euro) depending on whether you are younger than 26 or not. The busses go every 10 minutes, later in the evening every 15 minutes. It takes around 45 minutes to central Stockholm.

Take the bus to the last stop, Cityterminalen. From the bus station, walk to the nearby central station.

At Stockholm Central Station, find a Pressbyrån or the SL center, and buy a metro ticket. We recommend a 7 day ticket for 300 kr (35 euro). It is loaded on a travel card which costs additional 20 kr (2 euro). If you arrive after midnight, the Pressbyrån and SL Center will be closed. In this case, buy a single ticket at the entrance to the metro. In any case, take the blue or green line of the metro to Fridhemsplan, this should take around 10 minutes.

At Fridhemsplan metro station, take the exit Fleminggatan/S:t Eriksgatan. Take one of the staircases up and you will be at the street Sankt Eriksgatan or very near to it. Walk Sankt Eriksgatan to the south (not in direction of the bridge). After a walk of 350 meters, you will see the youth hostel Fridhemsplan on the left. Also look at the map. The metro station is marked by a blue T.

  2. By direct train

Follow the signs to Arlanda Express. Buy a ticket online in advance or at several places in the airport. They cost 130 kr (15 euro) if you are under 26 or have an ISIC student card. Otherwise tickets cost 260 kr (30 euro). Student tickets can only be bought at the ticket counter at the airport or the central station, not online. The trains go every 15 minutes, late in the evening every 30 minutes. It takes around 20 minutes to Stockholm Central Station.

At the central station, proceed as in the description of option 1.

Skavsta airport

Skavsta airport is about 100 km from central Stockholm. Busses take about 80 minutes and go only every 30 to 60 minutes.

Follow the signs to the place where the flight busses, flygbussarna, depart. Buy a ticket online in advance or at several places in the airport. The drivers also sell tickets, but they only accept credit cards, no cash. Tickets cost 115-129 kr (14-15 euro) depending on whether you are younger than 26 or not. The busses go every 30 to 60 minutes. It takes around 80 minutes to get to central Stockholm.

Take the bus to Stockholm City Cityterminalen. From there, proceed as in the description of option 1 from Arlanda.

Finding your way in Stockholm

Conference venue

GAeL 2013 is organised jointly by the math departments at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) and Stockholm University. The lectures will take place at KTH, at lecture hall D2.

Getting from the youth hostel Fridhemsplan to the conference venue

From the exit of the youth hostel, go to the right and follow the street Sankt Eriksgatan around 350 m, until you get to the bus stop Fridhemsplan. Take the bus 4 in the direction Radiohuset and leave at the stop Östra station. Bus 4 goes often, around every five minutes, and takes around 20 minutes. From the bus stop, cross the street and you are at KTH. Follow the signs to GAeL. If you would like to check the way in advance, look at this map.

General information

Stockholm is beautiful, but expensive. Expect a dinner at a restaurant to cost 150-250 kr (18-30 euro). Cheaper options like fast food may cost around 70 kr (8 euro). Especially alcoholic drinks are expensive due to high taxes. Expect a beer to cost at least 50 kr (6 euro). Convertion of Swedish crowns to Euro is 10 sek = 1,2 euro.

Public transportation

Stockholm has an extensive system of public transportation, consisting of the metro, busses and some trams. You will need to go by bus or metro at least 2-3 times a day. Single trips cost at least 25 kr, so a 7 day ticket for 300 kr (35 euro) should be the cheapest option. You load the ticket on a travel card (SL access card) which you buy for 20 kr together with your ticket. Busses are entered through the first door only, put your travel card at the blue card reader next to the driver and the driver will let you in.

More information

Meals

Breakfasts will be provided at the hostel for supported participants and will also be provided lunches at a nearby restaurant. There will also be a conference dinner on Tuesday 25/6 and some snacks at the poster session Monday 24/6. No other meals will be provided by GAeL.

Posters

We would very much prefer each participant to bring her or his own poster. In this case, it is up to the participant to choose format etc. However, if bringing a poster is impossible one can send an email with PDF-file for a poster in A3-format to Christine Jost (jost at math.su.se) no later than 14/6.

A LaTeX template for posters is available here. This requires the sciposter class. The finished poster looks like this.
