Scholarship for MSc or PhD student
in Algebraic Geometry in Warsaw
The scholarships are offered within the Sonata Bis grant "Complex contact manifolds and geometry of secants (CoCoMaGeS)" supported by NCN (National Science Center, Poland).

announces an open call for
1 scholarship for an MSc student or a PhD student. Only one of those scholarships will be awarded.
Details and conditions of the MSc scholarship:
- Default period of the scholarship May 2023 - April 2024 (12 months).
- At the starting date the applicant must be enrolled to an MSc program at a Polish university specialising in mathematics (or very close areas of science).
- Candidates are expected to have at least basic knowledge of algebraic geometry or properly demonstrate their interest in learning this branch of mathematics.
- The successful candidate is expected to prepare his/her Master thesis under the supervision of one of the CoCoMaGeS team members:
- The successful student will receive a scholarship of 1000PLN per month.
- In addition, the scholar will be granted a limited access to research costs, such as travel to conferences etc.
Formalities:
The fellow must respect the NCN rules of funding,
including those listed on page 7 of this document.
In particular, no salary from NCN is allowed at the same time as his/her scholarship in the project (page 7, subsection 2.1.3, item (b)).

Each application should contain
- basic personal data, including name(s), surname, date of birth, e-mail, and possibly other contact data,
- information about candidate's studies,
such as the date of commencement, department(s),
the list of advanced lectures attended by the candidate,
- information about candidate's scientific achievements,
such as average grade from previous academic years, grades of last term (semester),
information about BSc thesis (praca licencjacka) with a link to the thesis itself,
awards and distinctions, scholarships, and other information the applicant finds relevant,
- a brief description of candidate's mathematical interests and/or plans (or expectation) for his/her Master thesis and the preferred supervisor.
- In addition, the applicant may arrange a brief recommendation letter to be sent directly by a mathematician of his/her choice.
- All the documents above must be submited in Polish or in English.

The applications will be analysed by the committee of Jarosław Buczyński (chair), Maria Donten-Bury, and Giovanni Moreno.
The committee reserves the right to interview the best candidates prior to the decision. The invitations for the interview, if any, will arrive as soon as possible and the interviews will be conducted using zoom or in person (in Warsaw, either at IMPAN or at MIMUW).
The decisions should be sent before 25 April 2023.
Details and conditions of the PhD scholarship:
- Default period of the scholarship May 2023 - September 2023 (5 months).
- At the starting date the applicant must be enrolled to a PhD program at a Polish institution specialising in mathematics (note that receiving the scholarship does not imply admission to a doctoral school!).
- Candidates are required to have at least basic knowledge of algebraic geometry.
- Students must plan to work in one of the topics of the project:
(complex) contact manifolds, quaternionic-Kähler manifolds, twistor constructions, quaternion geometry,
secant varieties, tensor rank, Waring rank, and/or Hilbert schemes. Prior experience in these or related topics will be beneficial for the application.
- The successful candidate is expected to work under the supervision of Jarosław Buczyński
and collaborate with other team members listed on the project webpage.
- The successful student will receive a scholarship of 2400PLN per month.
- In addition, the scholar will be granted a limited access to research costs, such as travel to conferences etc.
