The gene genealogical approach to population genetics: biological issues
and recent applications
Kingman's coalescent process will be introduced and its assumptions
discussed from a biological perspective. Particular attention will be given
to questions about population structure (such as geographic subdivision
with restricted migration), and several extensions of the coalescent
that incorporate structure will be reviewed. Examples of the application
of coalescent theory to the study of human pre-history will be presented.
