Public health outbreaks require consideration of dynamics which occur at multiple scales: the within-host dynamics, the social contact patterns of people, and the resulting transmission patterns (to name only a few). In this talk we discuss applications of multi-scale model frameworks to understand interaction patterns between different subpopulations, and how interventions targeted to a specific subgroup affect the whole population. We will illustrate these notions using data from the COVID-19 pandemic.
