On the hyperspace of simple closed curves in the plane

The Vietoris hyperspace of simple closed curves in the plane  will be discussed. Its characterization is  a  challenging open problem.   An elementary proof of the hyperspace's  local contractibility  will be presented.

Joint work with Krzysztof Omiljanowski.
