Ph.D. position: ”The tragedy of the commons in dynamic context – modelling, methodology and prevention”

  1. Host: dr hab. Agnieszka Wiszniewska-Matyszkiel.
  2. How much: 4125 PLN / month (tax-free). Note that this will be added to the scholarship you received from the Doctoral School.

  4. Starting date: October 2023.
  5. For how long: 4 months.
  6. What topic: The title of the grant is ”The tragedy of the commons in dynamic context – modelling, methodology and prevention”, and its topic is dynamic and differential games modelling of ecological and economic phenomena. However, as my research interests are broader than that, other topics are also possible. This includes dynamic optimization, games with many players, various equilibrium concepts and information in games, including distorted information. If you want to work with me on some other topic that you feel might by compatible with my background, try to catch my interest.
  7. For whom: This position is for PhD students who are willing to devote their working time to research on the frontier of mathematics and its economic or ecological applications. I will do my best to support the candidate by asking and answering questions, suggesting new approaches and points of view. However, the candidate is expected to be able to generate her/his own research ideas (this is what one expects from a very good PhD dissertation).
  8. Requirements:
    • Deep understanding of basic concepts of mathematical analysis of one and several variables, ordinary differential equations, game theory and optimization.
    • Familiarity with dynamic optimization.
    • Familiarity with mathematical packages for symbolic calculations and numerical computation (e.g. Mathematica, Matlab, Maple).
    • Fluency in English.
    • Familiarity with LaTeX.
  9. Formal requirements: This position is available for PhD students who will be enrolled, during the scholarship period, in Doctoral Schools or PhD studies in mathematics in academic institutions in Warsaw. In justified cases, there is also an option for students of Doctoral Schools or PhD studies in closely related disciplines in academic institutions in Warsaw. In the latter case, either at least one of master or bachelor diplomas should be in mathematical sciences or the thesis should use advanced mathematical tools from the scope of tools used in the grant.
  10. How to apply:
    • Send your CV, pdf of your thesis, list of grades for your bachelor and master program, and short description of research interest to: agnese@mimuw.edu.pl by 17 September 2023.
    • You may be invited to an interview.
    • The final decision is expected by 25 September 2023.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to send me an email to the following address: agnese@mimuw.edu.pl
