Applications of Linear Algebra (Fall 2019)
Classes take place each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12:00-12:50 pm in William E. Kirwan Hall (Math Building), classroom 0304.
Prerequisites
Grade of C- or better in one of Math240, Math461 or Math341. In particular, the students are expected to know and understand the information from Chapter 1 of The Book (see below).
Textbook
We will follow The Book (another link) by UMD's Justin Wyss-Gallifent. We will cover around 10 chapters (2-11). The lecture will follow The Book closely with relatively significant differences in Chapters 9 and 10.
Office hours
Monday 1:00-1:20 pm, Wednesday 3:05-4:20 pm, Friday 1:00-1:20 pm. They take place in my office (4121, CSIC Building).
Evaluation Plan
The final grade will be based on the number of accumulated points. The points can be obtained in the following ways:
Homework (HM): 0-20 p. Each homework consists of 5 problems. Given either weekly or after each Chapter of The Book (thus, about 10-14 homeworks in total).
Midterms (MT): 0-30 p. Two midterms. First one around 4th chapter, second around 8th.
Special asignment (SA): 0-15 p. Special asignment will be given around one month before the final. It will require devising a model in a semi-realistic scenario (based on the knowledge acquired throughout the course). Note that the asignment is an extra way of obtaining points and it is possible to get 100 points without the asignment.
Final (FE): 0-50 p. Nothing particularly interesting to write here.
F1 = MIN(HM + MT + SA + FE,100)
F2 = (SA+FE)/0.65
F = MAX(F1, F2)
The final grades will be based on F. Note that both F1 and F2 range from 0 to 100.
Final
The final exam will take place during the class on Wednesday 5/8/2019 at 12 pm and on Friday 5/10/2019 at 12 pm.

Special assignment click here (due Wednesday 5/8/2019, no later than 16:20 pm, given directly to me).
Homework 5 (due Monday 4/22/2019): Exercises from The Book: 9.5 (b) (BY HAND) (20 points), 10.1, 10.4, 10.11. Remember to center the data if necessary (i.e. in ex. from Ch. 10). The homework should be given to me after the class or during my office hours not later than 1:20 pm. Alternatively it can be placed in my mailbox in the mailroom at Kirwan Hall.
Example midterm An example of a midterm exam. However, instead of problem 1.4 I recommend the midterm from the previous semester (calculations are more reasonable).
9.5 (b) (BY HAND) (10 points), 10.1, 10.4, 10.6
